Getting fit, making money and having kids,
Life cannot just be about these.
Hustle till you're dead, don’t stop or you’re a nobody,
Are written on the flags of our generation, each one desperate to be a somebody.
Short highs, drunken sighs and a pursuit of thrill every night,
I’ve come to learn that these are mere symptoms of despair untouched by the Light.
At first, I stood amongst those who partied, hoping desperately that I could be a somebody,
Yet I find myself now walking to exalt Christ, cherishing the life of being a nobody.
For a nobody to Christ is a somebody in eternity,
Spray paint that on a poster of the party-animal fraternities.
There is a peace that comes from carrying an empty, old wallet,
Even if it were stolen, one can barely even pawn it.
There is a beautiful and simple truth to living at square 1,
That if you were to wait until Jesus takes you, the best is yet to come.
So give up these vices that hold you from real joy,
And seek the narrow road, young girls and boys.
For at the end of this suffering, your patience will be rewarded,
For every trial endured and temptation ignored, His glory will be your award.
Idolatry always starts with a shift of your priorities towards fun,
And grows like a tumour until it tops your list at number one.
