What’s in a Smile?

While running life’s race, do you ever stop to blink?
To ponder about life’s little, underrated things.
Is it newer technology or the miracle of giving birth?
Or is it smaller, hidden and used synonymously with mirth?
Perhaps you have missed my point entirely,
But to a girl I know, it’s her occupation in its entirety.
It started in her youth, on the day she lost her smile,
To a growing child, that’s equal to a childhood defiled.
Many times did she attempt to grin,
But that ugly voice left her heart chagrined.
It came and went, as it pleased it did.
Whispering in her ear that overused fib.
Ugly, unacceptable, incomplete and forsaken,
Were the voice’s opinions on the topic in question.
So when you wonder what’s in a smile?
Perhaps you’ve taken yours for granted, my dear Gentile.
A single smile, all the difference can make,
To a person in love, it’s a smile that is forever framed.
Have you ever seen an unhappy customer barge in?
See how your smile can turn their frown into a grin.
What the overworked Father and the exhausted Mother have in common,
Is that a smile from their child is like a balm to their troubles.
See that sweeper working tirelessly to finish their shift?
Thank them with a smile and for their entire day they’ll cherish that gift.
A frowning doctor in scrubs is an intimidating sight,
Do I have cancer, covid or is that sprain from when I flew a kite?
But a smile from them can change your day,
Making all your WebMD symptoms go away.
Do you see how little we cherish our smile?
It’s such a beautiful thing that’s subtle, yet sublime.
But let’s not forget the girl’s plight spoken of before,
The best part’s to come, so stay with me for a little while more.
God saw her heart plead for her own little smile,
If only she knew His plan was to restore it in a while.
A Dentist was sent, his mission was clear,
He was on a direct quest from God to help a child whom He held dear.
Months did it take, to correct the teeth that refused to show,
But this was a worthwhile process, one that shaped the girl’s plans for sure.
The final moment came when the girl had to see,
If her hope was in vain, for a smile that would never be.
Slowly did her gums extend,
As her eager curiosity unveiled.
To her shock she saw the perfect smile,
What was she to say?
For God’s will was to make her smile hide until a time,
When she would learn the value of a smile in the life of a child.
The older she grew, the more she cherished the magic that was done,
By that Dentist’s hand, guided by God to restore what was gone.
So concludes the story of a girl who found her smile,
Who sought to help others find hope in similar times.
In other news, the voice went away to find another victim,
Teaching them to blame God, their parents, or even the System.
So please stop to take a breath and be thankful for your life,
For every time you lived to see the next day still alive.
What I wrote is tough to hear for some to compile,
But it’s the incredible testimony of the Girl who found her pretty smile.
